Steve DeBerg’s comeback got off to a shaky start with three sacks and a fumble, but a 29-yard touchdown pass by Chris Chandler turned out to be enough for Atlanta as the Falcons defeated the Detroit Lions 7-3 Friday night.

The host Lions were unable to move the ball against the Falcons but managed a 20-yard field goal. Jason Hanson missed two field-goal attempts and had a third try blocked.

Terance Mathis had four catches for the Falcons, including a lone touchdown in the second quarter. Ken Oxendine rushed with 65 yards on 13 carries and Jamaal Anderson added 41 yards on 10 carries.
