A 23-year-old motorcyclist died Friday morning when he collided with a southeast-bound freight train on the Union Pacific Railroad line north of Chemung.

Jeffrey Finger of rural Harvard was northbound on Maxon Road when the accident occurred at the railroad crossing, said Capt. Glenn Olson of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department.

“We don’t know why, but he failed to stop,” Olson said. “At the last minute, he put the motorcycle down.”

Medical personnel from St. Anthony’s Hospital of Rockford arrived by helicopter to help, but Finger was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 8 a.m.

The crossing does not have gates, only crossbars with flashing lights and bells.
