St. Anne’s Church, a nearly 300-year-old edifice in the center of downtown Annapolis, has withdrawn plans to add a basement and a sunken side-yard atrium.

Rev. John Randolph Price said church officials sensed that the city’s Historic Preservation Commission intended to reject the plan.

Local preservationists said the expansion would change the appearance of the church and disturb dozens of unmarked Colonial-era graves.

St. Anne’s sought added space because of its growth.
