Leave it to a man to come up with yet another thesis on the evils of artificial birth control. In “A family matter: Artificial birth control root cause of breakdown in family,” Philip F. Lawler nonchalantly sentences millions of women to the burden of unwanted children under the auspices of saving the family from breaking down.
He would deny men and women all of the pleasures of intimacy that marriage brings by telling us that they can sleep in the same bed together and yet not share any warmth or comfort unless they are involved in the process of creating children.
This approach violates every tenet of nature. Birth control is the single most important resource we have at hand that enables us to plan our families in a responsible manner. There should never be an unwanted child. Being a responsible adult means taking the proper steps to ensure that any child that is brought into this world is wanted, loved and will be taken care of.
And where is it written that every time you have intimate contact with another human being, that it can only be for the purpose of procreation? There are those who want to have a full life shared with another person without children. Children are not the sole reason for marriage. Nor are they the sole reason for living. They should be the outcome of two people who want children and who are willing to take on the responsibility for them.
Let’s not go back to the dark ages. Let’s use birth control as it was meant to be used–a way of allowing women and men to decide when to have their children and how many to have.
