Monsanto Co., St. Louis, said it had genetically engineered corn to resist rootworm, a pest that does an estimated $1 billion in damage to the North American corn crop each year. In field trials this summer, the corn demonstrated “excellent control” of rootworm, the biotechnology company said. There are currently no rootworm-resistant corn seeds available.
