Since coming to Chicago, Sammy Sosa has transformed his image from a wild-swinging, undisciplined “wannabe” to an icon who will be on the short list considered for this year’s Most Valuable Player.
Perhaps more important, however, Sosa has become a role model and the poster boy for sportsmanship. His enthusiastic support of Mark McGwire and his unrehearsed, emotional congratulations when McGwire hit his 62nd home run spoke volumes for his growth as a person and a player. Competitors at all levels and in all sports should take note that rivalry need not breed contempt.
In all respects, Sammy has learned to hit the cutoff man.
