The repentance movement spawned by President Clinton’s apology in the Monica Lewinsky matter has reached even to the hustings of Indiana.

State Sen. Steve Johnson, 50, a Republican, has no opposition in November, but that doesn’t mean he is a shoo-in. He admitted a week ago he had a brief affair with a co-worker during the 1997 legislative session. It turned out the co-worker was a 23-year-old intern. Johnson, married and in counseling, sounds as though he is ready to face the music.

But there is obviously one tune he is trying to rule out.

“I really don’t want to resign,” said Johnson. “Choices have consequences and this should have some consequences. There should be something done. Whatever is done needs to be done in an appropriate manner and be appropriate to the circumstances, and what that is, I don’t know.”

Word has it in the Indiana Senate that the Ethics Committee may be moving in on this one.
