Robert W. Olander, 76, of Homewood, a retired Amoco Corp. executive, died in his home Sept. 12 after a six-year battle with colon cancer.
“He liked to say, `When the going gets tough, the tough get going,’ and that showed in his fight,” said his wife of 52 years, Shirley.
Mr. Olander retired in 1985 as a senior sales manager and manager of toll road operations for Amoco’s Standard Oil division after 39 years, but he continued to work as a consultant until recently.
A native of Duluth, Minn., Mr. Olander served in the Coast Guard during World War II.
He was a talented singer and trumpet player who enjoyed playing big-band tunes and waltzes for his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Mark; a daughter, Diane Ellis; and six grandsons.
Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, followed by services at 4 p.m., in Tews Funeral Home Inc, 18230 S. Dixie Highway, Homewood.
