The Beach Park Village Board proved the adage that you have to spend money to make money Tuesday night as the board revealed the results of a special census.
In March, the board had agreed to spend about $40,000 to have the U.S. Bureau of the Census conduct a special survey in the village to determine whether the population of Beach Park had increased enough since the 1988 census to merit an increase in tax revenue from the state.
Tuesday night, the board announced that the special census reported an increase of 504 residents since 1988. As a result, the village is entitled to an additional $47,000 per year.
“When we decided to conduct the census earlier this year, we figured it would at least pay for itself,” said Village Clerk Laurella Cvengros. “It will do that in the first year.”
Board officials said the additional revenue probably would be spent on road improvements and other public works projects.
