Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

So you can’t tell a putter from a driver and the only birdies you know fly? Not to worry, you still can find a gift for a golfer that is par excellence.

“It’s generally not a good idea to go with clubs, because they’re very specialized,” says Lee Winters, assistant manager of Nevada Bob’s, 60 E. Lake St. “It used to be one-size-fits-all in clubs, but now you can get very specific measurements and weights. If you’re thinking clubs, get a gift certificate.”

Well, now that that is taken care of, what else can you give your favorite duffer? Lots.

Consider the At Home Putting Greens. They’re mats that let you practice in your own home when you can’t get to the golf course. When you’re done, just roll it up and put it in the closet.

They come in a variety of sizes and range in price from $11 to $50 at Nevada Bob’s. The most whimsical of these is what Winters calls the “At Home Green for golfers who need approval.” It’s battery operated and when you hit a hole-in-one, a cheer goes up, telling you “you’re the man.” Made by Tee-Off, it’s 3 feet by 10 feet and costs $50.

For fun on the course, there’s the Animal Golf Head Covers. Of course, there’s “Tiger,” dedicated to you-know-who, but they also come in almost every animal imaginable from aardvarks to zebras. They’re $17 by Daphne at Nevada Bob’s.

GolfLogic may not take the place of a new set of clubs, but it does include six other elements of the game. The credit card-sized tool ($20 at Sharper Image) includes a divot tool, a ball marker and a tiny club brush. It also has a ballpoint pen for keeping score.

For after-game fun, Golf Mart in Downers Grove and Naperville carries Golf Ball Ice by Hello Productions Inc. ($9), which makes ice cubes shaped like golf balls.
