A Chicago public school that celebrates the culture of its Mexican-American community is the winner of a national interiors award from the American Institute of Architects.

Designed by Ross Barney + Jankowski of Chicago, the $7.3 million Little Village Academy at 2620 S. Lawndale Ave. evokes the vibrant colors and bold geometry of Aztec architecture.

The institute cited the building for demonstrating “the power of exceptional architecture in public education.”

The school was the only Chicago winner among 29 honorees in architecture, urban design and interior architecture. Among those in architecture: The renovated Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress in Washington.
