Henry C. Strand, 83, a Golden Gloves boxing champion, died Saturday in Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. A Wheaton resident for seven years, Mr. Strand was born in Oconto, Wis., and was a longshoreman on the Milwaukee waterfront. Mr. Strand also owned a Milwaukee ice and coal business. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Strand made a name for himself in the boxing ring during the 1930s, when the sport routinely drew 10,000 spectators into the field house at the University of Wisconsin, said his son, Tim Strand. He was a Golden Gloves champion and won the Fightingest Fighter Award from the university. Survivors include his wife, Catherine; a son, Gary; a sister, Mary Pratt; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Friday in Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton.
