Gwendolyn Yvonne Greenwood, 64, a retired South Side high school teacher and guidance counselor, died of a heart attack March 9 in her South Side home. Born in Chicago, Mrs. Greenwood was the great-niece of Robert S. Abbott, founder and publisher of the Chicago Defender. She received a bachelor’s degree from George Williams College and a master’s from Chicago State University. She taught at St. Elizabeth, St. Thomas the Apostle and Phillips High School. At Phillips, Mrs. Greenwood decided to pursue counseling, and she served as a guidance counselor at Corliss and Kenwood High Schools and Lindblom Technical High School. After she retired in 1994, she worked as the coordinator of the College First mentoring program at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Mrs. Greenwood is survived by her daughter, Gina Lewis, and three grandchildren. Services were held March 16.
