Nigeria’s Court of Appeal on Monday dismissed a legal challenge to the presidential election victory of former military ruler Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo that was filed by his defeated rival, Olu Falae.

The widely expected decision moved Obasanjo a step closer to assuming power May 29, the date by which Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar has promised to end 15 years of military rule in Africa’s most populous nation.

“This petition lacks merit and . . . I hereby dismiss it in its entirety,” Presiding Justice Dahiru Musdapher said as he told the court of the panel’s 5-0 decision.
