The American Bamboo Society, founded in Pasadena, Calif., in 1979 and dedicated to the utilization and appreciation of bamboo, would be delighted to see the latest incarnation in everything from china and place mats to furniture. The recent global focus on the Far East in fashion and design brings out these exotic grass stems again and again. In China, bamboo is more than a plant; at one time it was the iron and steel of that nations economy. The Bamboo Society waxes eloquent on the reedy raw material.
