Jeffery A. Christensen, 50, a Chicago native who owned a horse-and-carriage business in Chesterton, Ind., died Saturday in the University of Chicago Hospitals. Mr. Christensen was born and raised in Chicago and graduated from Steinmetz High School in 1967. He attended a Chicago-area junior college for two years, before entering the U.S. Army. While serving in the Army during the early 1970s, he was stationed for two years in Germany. After returning to Chicago, Mr. Christensen worked and volunteered for the National Ski Patrol. In 1981, he married Margaret Heltsley and moved to Chesterton. Mr. Christensen was a horse farmer and owner of Christensen Carriage Inc. for 16 years. Christensen Carriage provided services for many local weddings and parades. “His biggest hobby were the horses,” said his son, Christopher Holth. Mr. Christensen also was an employee of L.A. Bell Motor Lines Inc. for 18 years. He was a member of the Porter County 4-H organization and Draft Horse Association, serving as superintendent of the Porter County Draft Horse Project. “He would basically do anything for you,” his son said. In addition to his wife and son, Mr. Christensen is survived by his mother, Virginia; two sisters, Merilee Nielsen and Caroline; and two grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, Ind.
