Last year, a week after the Columbine killings, a cannon went off at my school to celebrate Colonial Days. When it did, several students in my classroom ducked or looked around thinking we were being shot at. Many innocent students have been brutally murdered just going to school. As a teenager, I don’t feel safe walking down the halls. Teen violence has become a major problem at American schools. Although there has been much talk about why students commit these crimes, society hasn’t come up with a solution to the violence.
Even though I have heard several stories about why teens kill, I have not heard any good solutions to the problem. Here’s a logical solution: If we take away guns and large knives and make them inaccessible to kids, then the murder rate would be way down. If kids didn’t have the weapons, they wouldn’t have the opportunity to kill. They would be forced to deal with their problem through talking and therapy.
I know I would feel much safer if there was no chance a weapon could be brought to school.
