An overflow crowd packed the Valley View 365-U school board meeting room Monday as boundary committee members unveiled proposals for changes at the district’s two high schools.

Several of those in attendance objected to the plan, which would move almost 400 students in nine subdivisions from Romeoville High School to Bolingbrook High School.

Without the move, Romeoville High would be at or above its 2,200-student capacity in the 2000-01 school year, while Bolingbrook would be 500 students under capacity. A new addition at Bolingbrook High School will open next fall, increasing the school’s capacity from 1,650 students to 2,000.

Under the proposed changes, Bolingbrook High School would be near its new capacity in the 2000-01 school year.

Boundary committee representative Mark Cothron said the changes would allow for the growth that is expected in the Romeoville High School portion of the district, as builders begin to develop farmland.

Under the proposal, students entering the 9th and 10th grades in fall 2000 would be assigned to a high school under the new boundaries, while those entering the 11th and 12th grades would have a choice of which high school to attend. The district also proposes bus service to either high school for those students.

The board will vote on the boundaries next month.

Besides the high school boundary changes, the district expects to adjust elementary- and middle-school boundaries before the start of the next school year.

After making the presentation on the proposed boundaries, Cothron was sworn in as the board’s newest member, replacing the retiring Wade Jacobi.
