Food pantries in Crystal Lake and McHenry recently swelled by more than 1,000 pounds each after the Nunda Township Highway Department wrapped up its six-week drive to gather food for the needy.
“My goal was a ton of food. We went a little over that,” said town-
ship Highway Commissioner Don Kopsell.
“We printed up fliers and distributed them throughout the township,” Kopsell said.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t cover the whole township, but we’ve had very, very good response. We had one resident from McHenry who must have spent $60” at the grocery store, he said.
Cats and dogs in the Ringwood-based Pets in Need no-kill animal shelter also benefited from the drive. About 150 pounds of pet food was collected.
Kopsell’s target for next year will be 3,000 pounds, he said, adding that he hopes to include other town-
ship highway departments in the drive.
“Algonquin and McHenry have already shown interest,” Kopsell said. “It’s really great to be able to help people who need it.”
