Funnyman David Letterman suddenly turned serious during a taping of his talk show, telling audience members and guest Regis Philbin that he will be undergoing a test for possible heart disease.
Letterman, 52, was to undergo an angiogram Friday at an undisclosed hospital in New York. In an angiogram, a flexible catheter is inserted into an artery and guided to the area of the heart, then dye is injected into the catheter and an X-ray film is made of heart function.
The host of CBS’ “Late Night” program revealed the news during a taping Thursday of a show set to air Friday night.
The test “could result in a clean bill of health, medication or other procedures,” Letterman spokesman Howard Rubenstein said. Letterman will have the angiogram performed because “he thought it prudent to do this now as a precaution,” Rubenstein added.
