At 81, Nellie Copson has become England’s oldest female prisoner.
She went to jail Friday for not paying the equivalent of $4,411 in property taxes.
Her neighbors immediately launched a “Free Nellie” campaign with posters in windows near her home in the center of Droitwich, a town in the West Midlands.
The single woman has lived all of her life above a shop that has stood empty for several years. She owns the building but told a court she can’t afford the taxes on the shop.
She was sentenced to 14 days in jail.
