Authorities on Saturday continued searching for an elderly St. Anne woman who they believe fell through ice in the Kankakee River earlier this week outside Kankakee.

Drilling scores of holes in the ice, officials of the Aroma Fire Department and other departments used underwater cameras to search for the woman, who is in her 80s, said Fire Chief Bill Speakman. Divers did not go into the water.

The search began Thursday after fire officials rescued a pair of golden retrievers from the river. They brought the dogs to a local veterinarian, where their owner happened to work.

The dogs’ owner immediately asked about her mother, who was supposed to be caring for the dogs. Emergency officials later discovered footprints leading to ice at the edge of river, Speakman said. There was no set of returning footprints.
