Water main tap-on fees that developers pay to Lake in the Hills for new homes are expected to increase to $3,575 from $2,960, according to village officials.

Gerald Sagona, village administrator, told trustees at a budget workshop Tuesday night that the 1,790 homes scheduled to be built in the next few years will require about $10 million in upgrades to the water system.

The village would have a $1.1 million deficit if rates remain unchanged, Sagona said. The last water rate increase was seven years ago.

“We’re providing quality water,” Trustee Paul Mulcahy said. “I think it’s extremely fair. Development should pay for itself.”

Sagona said he expects the Village Board to adopt the fee increase before the next fiscal year, which starts May 1.
