Known for their quirky lyrics and unusual vocal style, the four-person a cappella group who will be at the Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Performing Arts Saturday have an equally singular name, The Bobs–derived from the dog show term “Best of Breed.”
With 20 years of singing and nine CDs to their credit, West Coast singers Amy Engelhardt, Joe Finetti, Richard Greene and Matthew Stull will present a show that is part theater, part comedy and part performance art.
The Bobs are a self-proclaimed “band without instruments” who use voices and body percussion to create orchestra-like harmonies.
“We are unlike any other a cappella group around,” said Stull, one of The Bobs’ founding members.
“Rather than doing traditional a cappella songs, we started by taking popular songs and taking away the instruments.”
Performing everything from humorous original satires to “voices-only” versions of rock songs by Cream and the Grateful Dead, the group tries to add a little comedy, Stull said.
“Everything we do seems to have a sense of humor to it,” he said.
“When you see four people doing `Purple Haze’ without instruments, it has to be funny.”
The Bobs will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Performing Arts.
Tickets are $22 for adults and $20 for students and seniors. For more information, call 847-895-3600.
