Bears defensive lineman Bryan Robinson was arrested on a battery complaint Sunday night after a 31-year-old woman charged he spit on her at the Leg Room, a tavern on the Near North Side.

Robinson, entering his fourth season with the Bears as the starting left defensive end, was arrested as he left the club. He posted 10 percent of his $1,000 bond and was released with an Aug. 9 appearance scheduled in Branch 29 Cook County Circuit Court.

“I’m very, very upset, but I really can’t say anything about it at this point,” Robinson said. The Bears also declined to comment.

Robinson, 25, made the St. Louis Rams in 1997 as an undrafted free agent out of Fresno State.

He was released and picked up by the Bears in August 1998, starting the last five games that season and all 16 in 1999.

“I think this thing is so blown out of proportion,” said Robinson’s agent, Mark Bartlestein, who said a lawyer would be hired. “He doesn’t even know who the girl is. He’s never had a problem with anybody, and I think the facts will show that he hasn’t done anything. It’s just so easy to jump down an athlete’s back, like it’s in vogue.

“We’re going to look into it, but there’s not a guy I believe in more than Bryan Robinson. He’s a class act all the way, and I think that’ll be proved.”
