Caught: The Bears’ string of penalty-free quarters by the offense and defense ended at five with a costly flourish. Cornerback Thomas Smith was flagged for holding on a third-down incompletion, keeping alive a Browns possession that resulted in a field goal.
Rookie linebacker Brian Urlacher drew a 15-yard flag for roughing the passer when he hit quarterback Tim Couch with his helmet under Couch’s chin in the second quarter. Then cornerback Walt Harris was called for pass interference before Tony Parrish’s leaping interception at the goal line erased some of the damage from the penalties.
Tackle Jimmy Herndon was called for holding, giving the Bears a dubious total of 47 yards lost to yellow flags in one quarter.
Outs: Tight end John Allred (calf), cornerback Reggie Austin (heel), quarterback Jim Miller (elbow) and receiver Marcus Robinson (abdominal muscle) were held out Saturday. All are expected to be available for the Cincinnati game Saturday. . . . The Bears donated 2,000 tickets for the Browns game to the Chicago Public Schools and 11 different Chicago charities and hospitals.
