The Wheaton City Council has agreed to pay to repave a 1.2-mile stretch of Orchard Road next year.

The repaving will cost more than $1 million. The city rejected a proposed total reconstruction of the road, complete with curbs and gutters.

The council opted instead to simply repave the two-lane road, performing reconstruction of the road where necessary, adding turn lanes at Durfee Road and Brighton Drive and adding sidewalks along as much of the road as possible.

The council jettisoned suggestions to add bike lanes along Orchard. Council members said cyclists can use the upgraded sidewalks that will parallel the road on at least one side

Under plans tentatively approved, the project will include a sidewalk link from Summerfield Court north to the Illinois Prairie Path, just north of Plamondon Road.
