Two Russian soldiers were killed and three were wounded as rebels kept up a spate of ambushes and raids on federal positions in the Chechen capital, Grozny, a Russian government official said.

Rebels attacked Russian positions 20 times within 24 hours Thursday and Friday, an official in the pro-Russian civilian government said.

The Russians, meanwhile, bombarded the rebels from the air and with heavy artillery, apparently unwilling to risk the losses that would come with a major ground attack on remaining rebel positions in southern Chechnya.
