A Warrenville man charged with being drunk when he walked into traffic and possibly caused an accident that left two dead, was ordered Tuesday to abstain from alcohol and illegal drugs.

James Browne, 31, had the condition of his bond changed by DuPage Judge Jane Mitton, ordering him to not consume alcohol or illegal drugs and to submit to random drug testing by probation officials. He had previously been released from custody on a personal bond requiring no cash deposit.

Browne is charged with being an intoxicated pedestrian on March 4, when he walked into traffic on Butterfield Road in Warrenville, causing a car to swerve to avoid him. The car swerved into coming traffic, and the accident left two women dead.

Assistant State’s Atty. Michael Pawl asked Mitton to broaden the bond restrictions, “because the public’s safety requires it.”

Browne, who contends he was simply crossing the road, has pleaded not guilty.
