Members of the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale faculty union have approved filing a notice of intent to strike.

The vote by 131 of 140 union members attending a general meeting gives union President Morteza Daneshdoost authority to file the notice, but does not obligate him to do so. The union could then call a strike 10 days after the notice is filed.

The union says 75 percent of the Carbondale faculty are paid 9 percent to 10 percent less than their counterparts at similar institutions. They are asking for 4.8 percent raises for each of the next four years and 2.3 percent “parity” increases to bring underpaid professors up to the level of their peers.
