Schaefer, Vincent Joseph (1906-1993): U.S. chemist and meteorologist who initiated the modern era of cloud seeding and weather control when, on Nov. 13, 1946, he released three pounds of dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) pellets from an airplane into a cloud over Pittsfield, Mass., and streamers of snow began to fall from the cloud.
