A third suspect has been charged in connection to an April shooting on the 700 block of Howard Street in Evanston that left a man wounded, according to the Evanston Police Department.

Nathaniel Washington Jr., 23, of the 600 block of McHenry Avenue, Woodstock, Illinois, is charged by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office with one Class 4 felony count of mob action and one Class 3 felony count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, a department news release said.

Two other suspects, Cajmere T. Lemond, 19, of the 1700 block of Monroe Street, Evanston, and Arthur Mitchell Jr., 18, of the 1800 block of Ashland Avenue, Evanston, have since been charged in relation to the shooting and have appeared in court as their cases move through the judicial process.

An arrest does not constitute a conviction.

Officers initially responded to multiple reports of gunfire on the 700 block of Howard Street at 6:08 p.m. on April 21, locating physical remnants of the gunfire inside a local business and a victim suffering from “non-life-threatening gunshot wounds” near Main Street and Elmwood Avenue, according to police.

The man was taken to the hospital via ambulance by first responders and treated for his injuries, police said.

Detectives conducted a follow-up investigation to review surveillance footage, interview witnesses and collect additional physical evidence from the scene, according to a department news release.

Following the arrests of Lemond and Mitchell, investigators ultimately developed probable cause to charge Washington in connection with the shooting, police said.

After consulting with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office Felony Review Unit, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Washington issued by the Circuit Court of Cook County.

Woodstock police officers arrested Washington on May 29 at 10:15 p.m. at his residence in the 600 block of McHenry Avenue in Woodstock, the news release said.

Evanston detectives took custody of Washington shortly thereafter and took him to the Evanston Police Department for further investigation on May 30 at 12:30 a.m.

Washington’s first court appearance was on June 2 at the Skokie Courthouse, 5600 Old Orchard Road, Skokie.

According to police, the investigation into the April 21 shooting remains active and ongoing.

Washington’s arrest represents an “additional development” in the case, police said, but individuals with more information related to the incident are encouraged to contact the Evanston Police Department.
