A suspect has been charged in the April 21 shooting that left a man suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound on the 700 block of Howard Street in Evanston, according to the city’s Police Department.
Arthur Mitchell Jr., 18, of the 1800 block of Ashland Avenue, Evanston, has been charged by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office with a Class 4 felony charge of reckless discharge of a firearm and another Class 4 felony charge of aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm.
Evanston police located and arrested Mitchell on April 29 on the 2100 block of Church Street after reviewing available video, witness statements and evidence collected at the scene, according to a police news release.
According to Evanston Police Commander Chelsea Brown, the investigation remains ongoing, but no further details will be released at this time.
Police initially responded to reports of gunshots fired on the 700 block of Howard Street shortly after 6 p.m. on April 21, according to a department news release.
Officers then located an adult male victim near the intersection of Main Street and Elmwood Avenue.
The victim fled the area where the shooting occurred with an actively bleeding gunshot wound, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries to both the arm and the torso, Brown previously told the Pioneer Press.
He was later taken in an ambulance by first responders to a local hospital for treatment.
Evanston technicians recovered additional physical evidence from the scene shortly thereafter, which helped detectives identify and locate Mitchell.
Mitchell appeared in court on May 1 at the Skokie Courthouse, where Judge Anthony Calabrese ordered him detained in custody. His next court date is May 28 at 9 a.m.
An arrest does not constitute a conviction.
