Evanston police responded Tuesday evening, April 21, to reports of shots fired on the 700 block of Howard Street, where a man reportedly suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, Commander Chelsea Brown confirmed to Pioneer Press.

At approximately 6:08 p.m., police located an adult male victim near the intersection of Elmwood and Greenleaf. He had fled an area where shooting occurred on Howard Street with an apparent gunshot wound.

The unidentified male victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries to both the arm and torso, Brown said.

He was later taken via ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

Brown said Evanston police detectives are continuing to review recovered physical and video evidence from the incident.

No persons of interest are in custody at this time and the case remains an “active investigation,” she added.

This is believed to be the first Evanston shooting in nearly a year, following an incident that occurred inside the emergency room at Evanston Hospital on June 5, 2025, that left a security guard injured, according to previous reports.

In last year’s case, the suspected gunman, a 28-year-old Evanston man, was brought to the Evanston hospital, located at 2650 N. Ridge Avenue, after exhibiting symptoms of mental illness, according to a prior news release.

The security guard suffered non-life-threatening injuries and the suspect was later arrested by police, per previous reports.
