My elegant solution to the presidential election mess follows: George Bush, Dick Cheney, Al Gore and Joe Lieberman meet. Bush offers Lieberman the vice presidency, asking Cheney to give up the potential job for health reasons. Lieberman accepts the vice presidency under Bush. Bush calls the governor of Connecticut and asks him to appoint a Democrat to Lieberman’s vacated Senate seat. This gives the Democrats a 51-50 margin in the Senate and enables them to name committee chairmen. Gore goes back to the party and claims he won back the Senate with his toughness. This sets him up for a 2004 presidential bid.
George W. Bush enters the White House with legitimacy and a potential honeymoon because of his magnanimous presidential behavior. The Supreme Court avoids a separation-of-powers confrontation.
