In his article “Harried nurses act to stem staffing woes” (Page 1, Dec. 20), Michael Berens writes, “Although the facility had empty beds, there weren’t enough nurses on duty to provide care, according to the Health Care Financing Administration, a division of the federal Department of Health and Human Services.”

A good part of the solution is simple–show nurses some respect and financial compensation that reflects the magnitude of our responsibilities/value to the patients and the facility, and improve our working conditions so we can do our job safely, efficiently and effectively and we will come.
