A man patiently waited his turn in line Monday, then handed a clerk at a South Side post office a note demanding money and made off with about $450 in cash, police said.
A clerk at the Jackson Park branch of the U.S. Postal Service at 700 E. 61st St. said that at 11:30 a.m. the robber handed her a note that read: “I have a gun. Give me the money,” police said.
When the clerk hesitated, the robber told her, “I’m serious and will shoot.”
He did not display a weapon. After the clerk handed over the cash from the drawer, the robber fled eastbound on 61st Street on foot.
It was not clear how many other people were in the post office at the time.
Police did not have a suspect in custody Monday night. Postal officials could not be reached for comment.
