If a Democrat fails to make Social Security payments for a worker, it’s a grievous transgression that prevents confirmation to the president’s cabinet. If a Republican (who has been very outspoken about immigration) harbors an illegal immigrant who does household chores, gives her money that is called an “allowance” instead of pay and fails to make Social Security contributions, it’s “compassionate conservatism.”

Democrats are immoral scoundrels who have adulterous affairs. Republicans are decent, honorable people who have youthful indiscretions (at all ages).

A Democrat who tries marijuana when in college is a scandalous dope-head and drug addict. A Republican who has a history of long-term alcohol and drug abuse (including a couple of arrests and attempted cover-up) simply claims to have been born again and the substance abuse becomes irrelevant. A Democrat who has a one-month deferment from a war that he had the courage to oppose (in retrospect, a wise position) is a coward and a draft dodger. A Republican whose family is sufficiently influential to get him safely into the National Guard (from which he was sometimes absent) and permanently out of the draft and a war that he supported (for others to fight) is not judged so harshly.

Democrats lie. Republicans misspeak.

Aren’t semantics wonderful?
