Wheaton Christian Grammar School is preparing to submit to Winfield officials an annexation and zoning application that would result in a new school.
Officials at the school, at 711 E. Harrison St. in Wheaton, have long been searching for a new site for the cramped, 500-plus-pupil operation.
Plans in 1999 to build a school on a 20-acre site on Galusha Avenue in Warrenville fell through when the property’s owner died and his heirs pushed for a more rapid sale of the land than the school was prepared for, school officials said.
Now, Wheaton Christian has a contract to buy 35 acres of the Fischer Farm, south of St. Charles Road and west of Gary Avenue.
The Carol Stream-based Christian publisher, Tyndale Publishing, has purchased 57 acres of the farm, and Wheaton Christian Grammar School is seeking annexation and zoning approval of the southernmost 35 acres of that property, said Bob Broman, the school’s director of development.
The publisher will eventually use some of the remainder of the land for industrial use.
“We are preparing our application, and once it’s complete, we’ll submit it to Winfield for annexation and rezoning,” Broman said.
Wheaton Christian Grammar School, which sits on a rectangular 5-acre parcel next to Wheaton College, wants to build a school to accommodate some of the more than 100 children on its waiting list.
The school, which would be backed by a fundraising campaign, would have three sections of each grade level.
Wheaton College officials have long expressed an interest in buying Wheaton Christian’s property once the school moves into a new building, school officials have said.
