A Gurnee woman pleaded guilty to a single count of aggravated domestic battery Thursday for stabbing her female companion in the chest with a barbecue fork and choking her with a belt.

Gretchen Dick, 23, of the 4300 block of Centennial Court, appeared before Lake County Circuit Judge James Booras.

Before accepting her plea, Booras repeatedly asked Dick whether she understood that she could receive probation or 3 to 7 years, and possibly up to 14 years, in prison. Dick indicated that she understood.

Assistant State’s Atty. Torrie Newsome said Dick attacked the woman she had been dating with a barbecue fork and stabbed her in the chest twice at about 11 p.m. Oct. 29. Newsome said Dick placed a belt around the woman’s neck and tried to choke her.

Dick called 911 and told the dispatcher she had stabbed the woman, Newsome said. The victim had to be revived when authorities arrived, and her neck bore bruise marks from the belt, Newsome said.

The victim was treated at a hospital and released.

In exchange for the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped attempted murder charges, Newsome said.

Dick, who is out on bond, is to be sentenced April 4.
