At the end of this week, the city plans to begin a much-needed, two-year project to renovate upper and lower Wacker Drive. At a recent community forum, the city announced that the heavy and noisy construction work would go on two years, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The city has put intense effort into attracting residents and tourists to the Loop area, and its efforts have been successful. Apparently, however, those who have chosen to live here have not been a concern for the city in setting construction hours. What happened to simple common sense and simple courtesy?

Does this work need to be done? Absolutely. Should area residents be prepared to put up with noise and traffic disruption? Absolutely. Should area residents have no input into setting reasonable hours for loud work? Absolutely not.
