Following “The Rules” may lead you to the right man, but it won’t necessarily keep you out of divorce court. That’s where Ellen Fein, co-author of the book series that launched 1,000 feminist essays, is rumored to be headed.
With the publication of “The Rules: Time-Tested Secrets for Capturing the Heart of Mr. Right” and “The Rules II,” Fein and co-author Sherrie Schneider urged single women to wear lipstick while jogging and never accept Saturday night dates after Wednesday. If a relationship doesn’t work out, they wrote, “you brush away a tear so that it doesn’t smudge your makeup and you move on.”
Let’s hope Fein is wearing waterproof mascara and packing plenty of tissues: She recently filed for divorce from her husband in the Supreme Court of Nassau County, New York, on grounds of abandonment.
With Paramount eyeing the rights to a movie version of “The Rules” and the third “Rules” book, “The Rules for Marriage: Time-Tested Secrets for Making Your Marriage Work,” set to come in June, the split could hardly have come at a worse time.
True to the “never let ’em see you sweat” attitude of “The Rules,” Fein first denied the rumors. But her divorce lawyer, Stephen Gassman, confirmed papers were filed.
