EQUIVOCAL DEATH

By Amy Gutman

Little, Brown, 355 pages, $24.95

I’m not a fan of thrillers, but I got a big kick out of this one. In fact, it even sustained me through a night of delays at O’Hare. Yes, there was a murder mystery to be solved here, but more interesting were the mysteries of life at a big law firm, full of pomposity, misery, greed and back-stabbing. Who would ever want to work there? It’s a great read, with a brainy protagonist sure to resonate with twentysomething women–and their older sisters.
