Des Plaines taxi operators would be able to apply for an unlimited number of cab licenses as long as the companies own or lease a sufficient number of vehicles for the licenses under a proposed ordinance.

Ald. Don Smith said he hopes the change will spur competition, but some cab operators said granting unlimited licenses could punish operators with established track records.

“It’s throwing [Des Plaines] to the wolves,” said Jym Antoneule, owner of Mt. Prospect-based 303 Transportation LLC. Antoneule said new companies might establish taxi service in Des Plaines only to quit operating after a short time in business.

The proposal could appear before aldermen June 4.
