The Park Ridge City Council has approved a zoning change to control the size of new homes by creating a penalty for high ceilings.

Under the amendment, any room with a ceiling more than 12 feet high would be counted twice in calculating the floor area ratio of the house. The floor area ratio is limited to 45 percent of the lot size. The current ordinance allows 16-foot ceilings.

The 9-3 vote earlier this month reflected a division between aldermen who believe such restrictions discourage development and those who believe residents want something done about the size of houses.
