Here is a list of some of the community efforts planned in support of the rescue and recovery efforts.

FUNDRAISERS

Batavia

Breakfast, Batavia Overseas Post 1197 Veterans of Foreign Wars, 645 S. River St., 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday. $5.50 for adults, $2.75 children younger than 10.

Geneva

Friday night fish fries, Geneva American Legion Post 75, Friday and Sept. 28, all proceeds to be donated. Call 630-232-2171.

South Elgin

Kids will hand out flags for mailboxes and collect donations for the American Red Cross in the Thornwood subdivision. Jewel and TCF Bank will match all donations.

PUBLIC EVENTS

Chicago

Memorial service, opening of Eschikagou Powwow, 59th Street and Dorchester Avenue, noon Saturday.

Unity vigil, Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes, Thompson Center, 100 W. Randolph St., 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

Crystal Lake

Educational forums, “Situations and Events Leading to Recent U.S. Attacks,” McHenry County College, 8900 U.S. Highway 14; noon to 1:30 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Conference Center. Call 815-455-8613 or 815-455-8756.

Downers Grove

Memorial service, 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday in Fishel Park on Grove Street, just west of Main Street. Downtown businesses will donate a portion of Saturday’s sales.

Lombard

Memorial service, Village Hall, 235 E. Wilson Ave., 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Orland Park

Orland Township is selling “God Bless America” lawn signs. $15. Township office, 15100 S. 94th Ave. Call 708-403-4222.

Streamwood

Candlelight vigil, 7:30 p.m. Friday , Veterans Memorial at Village Hall, 301 E. Irving Park Rd.
