A man faces murder charges in a shooting death outside a West Side mattress factory Friday night.
Richard Cole, 22, of the 4700 block of West End Avenue, was charged Saturday with first-degree murder, attempted armed robbery and aggravated battery with a firearm in connection with the slaying of Pedro Rodriguez of the 1800 block of West 21st Place and the wounding of Robert Gonzalez, said police spokeswoman Alice Casanova.
About 11:30 p.m., Rodriguez, 36, and Gonzalez, 49, were working at their catering truck outside the Chicago Mattress Factory, 4107 W. Kinzie St., when Cole drove up with three other men, police said. Cole approached with a handgun and demanded money, and when they refused he shot Gonzalez in the leg and Rodriguez in the chest, authorities say.
Three employees from the factory tackled Cole and held him until police arrived, police said.
Gonzalez was in fair condition Saturday night, a Mt. Sinai Hospital spokeswoman said.
