The point of the Oct. 28 letter to the editor “Stop junk mail” was that organizations that send this mail should cease and desist of this practice in order to allow the U.S. Postal Service lower volumes to be screened. I want to point out that of all the mail the postal service handles, 63 percent is advertising mail. This mail comes from businesses and non-profit organizations. They send this mail because they don’t have another viable alternative. If you stop this mail, you in essence are putting thousands of jobs in jeopardy at the postal service alone.

But also understand that advertising mail also touches paper, printing and mail companies, along with a host of ancillary companies that furnish products and services to these industries. Mail advertising provides jobs to more than 4 million people nationwide.

The postal service handles 680 million pieces of mail every day. We have only had a few cases of anthrax mail. Let’s not overreact to this threat. To do so will score one more point for terrorism.
