Not having a college degree certainly does not make anyone less intelligent.
In today’s society, however, a college education is quickly becoming considered the norm. This stereotype can limit a person’s growth potential right from the start.
How ironic these new standards have become. Not too long ago, less than a fifth of all high school graduates went on to college.
And although the number of people going on to college has greatly increased, there are other means by which a person can further his or her education.
Take a look at today’s’ classified ads, for example.
Very few employers are looking for someone without a BS or BA. But it doesn’t matter what your degree is in, just that you have one.
It used to be that you were hired based on your ability, not your education, and then trained to do your job. Somehow today’s employers are removing more and more of the job training and having the employees teach themselves. Today’s employers seem to be relying too heavily on the concept that a degree equals knowledge, rather than measuring a person’s actual smarts.
In today’s world, we have unlimited outlets in which we can further our personal depth of knowledge. For example, almost everyone owns a PC or at least has access to one.
Whether doing research on the Internet or learning a new computer program, we are becoming more diverse and learning every day. It doesn’t seem justified that a self-educated person can be discounted simply because he or she does not have a degree.
Quite simply, people should be considered on a case-by-case basis.
