Rolling Meadows-based Internet networking company CommWorks Corp. stands to hold its own in a decentralization of parent 3Com Corp., in which 8 percent of the 3Com workforce will be cut.

But Santa Clara, Calif.-based 3Com would not comment today on local staffing details in its restructuring. A statement said about 500 jobs would be cut, bringing the workforce to 5,400.

The plans are intended to make 3Com profitable before June. Last month, the company posted a $47 million operating loss for the quarter, plus another $57 in special charges.

Some corporate activities in marketing, human resources and finance to CommWorks and other 3Com units, the company said, while accounting and information technology would be delivered as shared services.

CommWorks, recently relocated from Mount Prospect, claims to have built network platforms for 16 of the world’s 20 largest service providers. Last year it accounted for 1,400 of 3Com’s 12,000 employees worldwide, with 77 offices in 36 countries on six continents.

The other 3Com units are Business Networks Co. and Business Connectivity Co. Its U.S. Robotics unit was spun off in 2000.

3Com stock closed a penny lower at $6.10 in Nasdaq trading.
